I already had an external mount antenna for a previous Garmin GPSMAP 496. This is a simple add on to ensure good reception in the cockpit. Easy to attach to the BNC cable and easy to attach to the unit. I tried the Aera 660 without this and it worked well but for peace of mind, and to use the existing equipment this was an easy upgrade.
